Luke 11:42
“But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, but you bypass justice and God’s love. You ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.”
What does Luke 11:42 mean?
Jesus is calling out a painful contradiction: the Pharisees were scrupulous about small religious details like tithing their garden herbs, yet they were neglecting the weightier matters of treating people fairly and showing compassion. He's not saying the little disciplines don't matter, but rather that obsessing over them while ignoring justice and love gets your whole spiritual life backwards. This cuts to something many of us recognize in ourselves. We can become so focused on doing certain "right things" (attending services, following rules, appearing respectable) that we miss the actual point: becoming more just, more loving, more generous toward others. Jesus is inviting the Pharisees, and us, to hold both at once. The disciplines have value, but they're never meant to become a substitute for the harder work of genuine compassion and fairness in how we treat people.
