What does Luke 10:37 mean?
A lawyer had just asked Jesus the tricky question "Who is my neighbor?" Instead of giving a direct answer, Jesus told the story of the Good Samaritan, a man from a group that Jews typically despised, who stopped to help a stranger beaten and abandoned on the road. Everyone else—a priest and a Levite—had passed by. When Jesus asked which person had been a true neighbor, the lawyer had to admit it was the one who showed mercy. Jesus then turns those words back on him with a simple command: go and do the same. This isn't about feeling warm emotions toward others; it's about actually doing something. The challenge is to let go of who we think deserves our help and instead show mercy to whoever is in front of us, whatever our differences might be. Real neighborliness, Jesus is saying, means crossing whatever boundaries we've built and acting with compassion toward the person in need.
