What does Luke 10:29 mean?
A lawyer had just heard Jesus say to love your neighbor as yourself, and instead of accepting the challenge, he wanted to defend his own behavior. By asking "Who is my neighbor?" he was really trying to draw a boundary around his responsibility, as if some people counted and others didn't. It's a very human impulse to find loopholes in difficult commands, especially when we're not quite ready to change. Jesus responds with the parable of the Good Samaritan, showing that a neighbor isn't determined by ethnicity or social status, but by compassion in action.
