What does Luke 1:29 mean?

Mary's startled reaction here is deeply human and honest. The angel Gabriel had just appeared to her with a greeting, and instead of feeling honored, she felt confused and afraid, trying to make sense of what was happening and what his words could mean. Her troubled pondering shows us that encounters with the sacred aren't always peaceful or comfortable moments, even when they carry good news. Sometimes faith begins not with instant peace, but with the courageous willingness to stay present with something we don't yet understand.
