What does Leviticus 8:29 mean?
In the ancient priesthood, certain parts of sacrificial animals were reserved as gifts to God and portions for the priests themselves. Here, Moses is performing the ritual to set apart Aaron and his sons as priests, and the breast of the ram becomes his ceremonial share, waved before God as a way of dedicating it. This practice reinforced that the priests' sustenance came through their sacred service, and that even what they received was first acknowledged as coming from God's hand.
