Leviticus 7:34

For the waved breast and the heaved thigh I have taken from the children of Israel out of the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons as their portion forever from the children of Israel.’”

What does Leviticus 7:34 mean?

God is describing how the priests would be sustained through their service. When Israelites brought peace offerings (voluntary sacrifices to give thanks or seek blessing), specific portions—the breast and thigh—went to Aaron and the priests as their ongoing payment. Since priests didn't own land or have regular jobs, these offerings from the community's sacrifices were how they survived. This reveals something beautiful about how God set up care for those serving the community. The people's gratitude toward God directly supported those leading them in worship, creating a built-in system where spiritual leadership and the people's generosity were woven together. It's a reminder that supporting those who serve spiritually has always been part of how faith communities function.
