“The fat of that which dies of itself, and the fat of that which is torn of animals, may be used for any other service, but you shall in no way eat of it.”
What does Leviticus 7:24 mean?
God was setting boundaries around what the Israelites could eat, particularly concerning animal fat. In their worship system, fat from properly sacrificed animals belonged to God as a special offering, but fat from animals that died naturally or were killed by predators was considered unsuitable for sacred use. This law allowed that rejected fat to be used practically (for lamps, tools, or other purposes) rather than wasted, but eating it was forbidden. The underlying principle speaks to respecting what is holy and set apart. By restricting sacred fat to animals offered intentionally and properly, God was teaching his people that worship and obedience matter—that there's a difference between what we give God and what we keep for ourselves. Even in their daily lives and meals, they carried this awareness that some things belong to God in a special way.
