“When anyone touches any unclean thing, the uncleanness of man, or an unclean animal, or any unclean abomination, and eats some of the meat of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which belong to Yahweh, that soul shall be cut off from his people.’””
What does Leviticus 7:21 mean?
In ancient Israel's worship system, peace offerings were special meals shared between God, priests, and the people, so they carried particular holiness. This law protected that sacred space by saying that anyone ritually unclean, whether from contact with a dead body, certain animals, or other sources of impurity, couldn't participate in eating these offerings. Being "cut off from his people" meant exclusion from the community's worship life, which was serious but also served as accountability, emphasizing that approaching God requires genuine preparation and respect. The underlying principle still speaks to us today: our relationship with God matters enough to take seriously. We don't need ancient purity rules anymore, but the idea remains that when we come before God, we're invited to come with honest hearts and sincere intention, not carelessly or while holding onto things that distance us from him. It's less about punishment and more about understanding that sacred moments deserve our full, genuine presence.
