Leviticus 6:28
“But the earthen vessel in which it is boiled shall be broken; and if it is boiled in a bronze vessel, it shall be scoured, and rinsed in water.”
What does Leviticus 6:28 mean?
When a priest prepared a sin offering by boiling meat in a pot, the rules about afterward reflected something important about holiness: some things that touch sacred work become too set apart for ordinary use. An earthen pot (made of clay) was fragile and porous, so once it absorbed the holy offering, it couldn't be properly cleaned and had to be destroyed. A bronze vessel, being durable and non-porous, could be scrubbed and rinsed to serve again. For those of us today, this points to a deeper truth: encountering God changes us. Some old patterns, old containers we've lived in, may need to be let go of completely rather than restored. Other parts of our lives can be cleansed and made useful in new ways. The specificity of these instructions reminds us that God cares about how we handle sacred things, including how we handle the transformation that comes from drawing near to Him.
