Leviticus 27:31
“If a man redeems anything of his tithe, he shall add a fifth part to it.”
What does Leviticus 27:31 mean?
When someone in ancient Israel wanted to keep something they'd already set apart as a tithe (a tenth given to God) instead of actually giving it away, they could buy it back, but they had to pay extra as a penalty for changing their mind. That extra fifth meant they were essentially paying 120 percent of its value to get their own thing back. It's a practical rule that discouraged people from making casual vows they didn't intend to keep, while still allowing flexibility in genuine circumstances. The underlying principle remains surprisingly relevant: if we promise something to God or commit to a spiritual practice, treating it seriously matters, and reconsidering our commitments isn't cost-free (at least to our character and integrity).
