What does Leviticus 27:18 mean?
When someone in ancient Israel dedicated their land to God's service after the Jubilee year had passed, the value of that gift was calculated based on how many years remained before the next Jubilee would come around. The Jubilee, occurring every 50 years, was a reset time when all land returned to its original owners, so a field was worth less the closer you got to that year. The priest would adjust the monetary value downward to reflect this shortened timeframe, making the expected reduction in value an act of fairness rather than penalty.
