“You shall put pure frankincense on each row, that it may be to the bread for a memorial, even an offering made by fire to Yahweh.”
What does Leviticus 24:7 mean?
In the tabernacle, the priests arranged twelve loaves of bread as a symbolic offering to God, representing the twelve tribes of Israel. Pure frankincense was placed alongside each row of these loaves, and when the old bread was replaced with fresh loaves, the frankincense was burned as a fragrant offering that went up to heaven. This practice reminded both the priests and the people that even ordinary sustenance comes from God and deserves our gratitude and remembrance. The frankincense transformed a simple bread offering into something that connected the earthly meal to God's presence, making it a way of saying "we acknowledge you in everything we have."
