What does Leviticus 22:24 mean?
This instruction comes from the detailed guidelines God gave about acceptable sacrifices in the temple. The principle underlying it is that offerings to God should be whole and unblemished, reflecting respect and sincerity rather than giving God what's damaged or worthless. A priest wouldn't accept a defective animal from someone's herd, which protected the integrity of worship and prevented people from casually offloading their problem animals as religious duty. For us today, this speaks to the question of what we bring to God in our own worship and service. While we're not making animal sacrifices anymore, the deeper truth remains: God values honest, genuine offerings of our best selves, not the leftovers of our attention or half-hearted commitments. Coming to God with our whole hearts, not just the parts we think are presentable, is what makes our worship real.
