Leviticus 22:21
“Whoever offers a sacrifice of peace offerings to Yahweh to accomplish a vow, or for a freewill offering, of the herd or of the flock, it shall be perfect to be accepted. It shall have no defect.”
What does Leviticus 22:21 mean?
In ancient Israel, when someone made a promise to God or wanted to give a generous offering, they brought an animal from their livestock to the temple. This verse sets a clear standard: that animal had to be healthy and whole, with nothing wrong with it. The idea wasn't about God being picky or harsh, but rather about integrity in how we approach something sacred. You wouldn't offer someone you love a gift that's broken or half-hearted, and the Israelites were reminded that honoring God deserved their very best, not their leftovers. For us today, this principle still whispers something important: when we make commitments to God or express our gratitude, genuine devotion asks something real of us, not just the easiest part of ourselves.
