and so cause them to bear the iniquity that brings guilt, when they eat their holy things; for I am Yahweh who sanctifies them.’”

What does Leviticus 22:16 mean?

God is warning the priests here about treating sacred offerings carelessly or allowing unqualified people to eat them. When holy things set apart for God are mishandled or consumed by those who shouldn't, it creates a kind of spiritual debt, and the responsibility falls on the priests who were meant to guard them. The underlying message is that holiness matters, boundaries matter, and those entrusted with sacred responsibility will answer for how they steward it. God's reminder that he is the one who sanctifies (sets things apart as holy) underscores that this isn't arbitrary rule-following, but honoring something genuinely set apart for a purpose.
