What does Leviticus 21:10 mean?
The high priest held a special role in Israel's worship system, and this verse outlines some of the disciplines required of him. He couldn't engage in the typical mourning practices (loose hair and torn clothes) that ordinary priests and people used to express grief, because his position demanded that he maintain composure and readiness to serve at the altar. This rule reflected something important about spiritual leadership: the high priest's personal emotions couldn't interfere with his duties before God and the community.
