Leviticus 2:9
“The priest shall take from the meal offering its memorial, and shall burn it on the altar, an offering made by fire, of a pleasant aroma to Yahweh.”
What does Leviticus 2:9 mean?
When someone brought a grain offering to God in ancient Israel, the priest would take a symbolic portion (called the memorial) and burn it on the altar. The rest of the offering could be eaten by the priests as their provision. This practice acknowledged that all gifts ultimately belong to God, while also sustaining those who served in the temple. The "pleasant aroma" language might sound unusual to us today, but it's simply how the Bible describes God receiving and accepting an offering with favor. Whether someone brought grain, animals, or other gifts, God valued the heart behind the gift, and this ritual helped people tangibly express their gratitude, confession, or devotion.
