“You shall not glean your vineyard, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the foreigner. I am Yahweh your God.”
What does Leviticus 19:10 mean?
God is instructing farmers to intentionally leave behind part of their harvest, not out of carelessness but as a deliberate act of provision for people in need. When grape pickers finished their work, they were commanded to leave the overlooked bunches and fallen fruit where they lay so that poor people and immigrants could come gather them and feed themselves with dignity. This wasn't charity handed down from above, but rather an opportunity for vulnerable people to work for their own sustenance by gleaning what remained. The instruction reveals God's deep concern for those at the economic margins and suggests that those with resources have a real responsibility to structure their lives and livelihoods in ways that protect others, not just themselves.
