Leviticus 18:24
““‘Don’t defile yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations which I am casting out before you were defiled.”
What does Leviticus 18:24 mean?
God is telling the Israelites that the practices He's warning against (listed throughout this chapter) aren't arbitrary rules, but boundaries that protect them from real spiritual and moral corruption. The nations already living in Canaan had embraced harmful patterns that separated them from God, and those same patterns would damage the Israelites if they adopted them. There's compassion underneath this warning, not just authority, because God is essentially saying, "I'm clearing this land for you, but only if you don't repeat the mistakes that made it uninhabitable in the first place." Even today, this reminds us that God's moral boundaries often exist because He sees the genuine damage certain choices cause to our souls and communities.
