““‘Every person that eats what dies of itself, or that which is torn by animals, whether he is native-born or a foreigner, he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the evening: then he shall be clean.”
What does Leviticus 17:15 mean?
In ancient Israel, eating meat that wasn't properly slaughtered was considered spiritually contaminating, so anyone who did so (whether Israelite or visitor) needed to undergo a cleansing ritual. The person had to wash their clothes and body in water, then wait until evening before they could participate in normal community life again. This wasn't about punishment, but rather a way of marking that something unholy had occurred and needed to be set right through deliberate action. The ritual acknowledged both the mistake and the path back to wholeness, showing that even unintentional violations of sacred boundaries could be addressed through repentance and restoration.
