““Aaron shall come into the Tent of Meeting, and shall take off the linen garments, which he put on when he went into the Holy Place, and shall leave them there.”
What does Leviticus 16:23 mean?
After the Day of Atonement rituals, Aaron needed to shed the special linen clothes he wore into the Holy Place and leave them behind in the tent. This wasn't just practical housekeeping, but symbolically important: those garments had absorbed the weight of the people's sins, so they couldn't simply be reused as regular clothes. By removing them in the sacred space itself, Aaron was essentially leaving the burden there rather than carrying it back into ordinary life. This speaks to something many of us intuitively understand about spiritual work. Sometimes we need to consciously set down what we've carried, to acknowledge that certain weights don't belong in our everyday spaces. The image suggests that God provides a way to release what's been borne, rather than expecting us to carry everything forward indefinitely.
