Leviticus 16:17
“No one shall be in the Tent of Meeting when he enters to make atonement in the Holy Place, until he comes out, and has made atonement for himself and for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel.”
What does Leviticus 16:17 mean?
On the Day of Atonement, the high priest entered the most sacred inner chamber of the tabernacle completely alone to perform the rituals that would reconcile Israel with God. This solitude wasn't about secrecy or mystery, but rather emphasized that this act of cleansing was so profound and spiritually significant that no one else could witness it or stand in that space. The priest carried the weight of the entire nation's sins and shortcomings before God, making himself spiritually clean first so he could then extend that restoration to everyone else. It's a beautiful picture of how sometimes the deepest spiritual work happens in moments of solitary surrender, and how one person's faithfulness and willingness to stand before God can have ripple effects for an entire community.
