What does Leviticus 16:12 mean?
On the most sacred day of the Jewish year (the Day of Atonement), the high priest had to enter the Holy of Holies, the innermost sanctuary where God's presence dwelt. Before approaching that overwhelming holiness, he carried burning coals and fragrant incense to fill the space with smoke, which served as both a protective barrier and a sign of reverence. The incense created an atmosphere of worship and humility, acknowledging that approaching God required preparation and awe. This ritual reminds us that coming before God calls for intentionality and respect, and that we're never meant to rush into His presence casually or arrogantly.
