Leviticus 13:31
“If the priest examines the plague of itching, and behold, its appearance isn’t deeper than the skin, and there is no black hair in it, then the priest shall isolate the person infected with itching seven days.”
What does Leviticus 13:31 mean?
When someone had a skin condition that itched persistently, the priest would inspect it carefully to determine if it was serious or not. The key signs the priest looked for were whether the affected area sank below the surface of the skin and whether any hair in that spot had turned black, both indicators of a more severe infection. If neither of those warning signs was present, the person wasn't immediately declared unclean but was instead quarantined for a week so the condition could be observed and monitored. This approach shows a kind of practical wisdom, isolating someone not out of permanent rejection but to allow time for clarity about what was actually happening with their skin.
