What does Leviticus 11:5 mean?
In ancient Israel, certain animals were designated as clean or unclean based on specific physical traits. The cony (a small rabbit-like animal) failed to meet the dietary requirements because while it appeared to chew cud like clean animals, it didn't actually have split hooves as required. The point wasn't arbitrary rule-making, but rather God establishing boundaries that helped shape the identity and daily practices of his people. For many of us today, these Old Testament food laws feel distant, but they remind us that holiness often involves making thoughtful distinctions and that following God sometimes means accepting boundaries we might not fully understand in the moment.
