What does Leviticus 11:18 mean?
This brief list is part of the birds God declared unclean under Old Testament dietary laws, meaning the Israelites weren't to eat them. The white owl, desert owl, and osprey were predatory birds that consumed other animals, and the law grouped them with other creatures considered unsuitable for food. For those of us reading this today, it's worth knowing that these laws were specific to ancient Israel's covenant with God and aren't binding for Christians (Jesus declared all foods clean in the New Testament). But the passage can still remind us that God cares about the details of how we live, and that different seasons of faith sometimes call for different practices. What mattered most then and now is a heart oriented toward obedience and closeness to God.
