Leviticus 10:10
“You are to make a distinction between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean.”
What does Leviticus 10:10 mean?
This instruction comes right after Aaron's sons offer unauthorized fire before God, and it's basically God saying to the priests: pay attention to what matters. The difference between "holy" and "common" meant understanding that some things, places, and actions were set apart for God's purposes, while others were part of everyday life. Similarly, "unclean" and "clean" weren't about hygiene in our modern sense, but about ritual purity, spiritual readiness, and what the community needed to do to stay in right relationship with God. For us today, this speaks to something deeper than ancient rules. It's about being intentional with our lives, recognizing that not everything is the same and treating important things with the care they deserve. Whether that's guarding our time with God, being thoughtful about what we let into our hearts, or simply acknowledging that some moments and commitments matter more than others, the principle holds: we grow spiritually when we make wise distinctions about how we live.
