Lamentations 5:11
“They ravished the women in Zion, the virgins in the cities of Judah.”
What does Lamentations 5:11 mean?
This verse captures the raw pain of Jerusalem's destruction by Babylon in 586 BC, when the city fell and its people suffered terrible violence. The writer is naming something unbearable that happened during the siege and aftermath: women were assaulted. Rather than looking away from this suffering, the book of Lamentations insists on speaking it aloud, which is part of how the community begins to grieve and process what they've lost.
