Lamentations 1:5
“Her adversaries have become the head. Her enemies prosper; for Yahweh has afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions. Her young children have gone into captivity before the adversary.”
What does Lamentations 1:5 mean?
Lamentations was written after Jerusalem fell to Babylon, and this verse captures that devastation through the image of a city personified as a suffering woman. The writer is describing how those who attacked Jerusalem now rule over it, while the city's own people (especially the vulnerable young) are taken away as slaves. The hard part of this verse is its claim that God himself brought this affliction because of the people's repeated sins, which the writer is wrestling with honestly rather than hiding from.
