What does Lamentations 1:22 mean?
The writer of Lamentations is pouring out deep pain to God—Jerusalem has been destroyed, people are suffering, and this voice wants God to see the cruelty of their enemies and respond with justice. The plea "do to them as you have done to me" isn't actually asking God to destroy the enemies in the same way; rather, it's an honest expression of anguish, like saying "God, you see my devastation, so see theirs too." The closing words reveal what's really happening: the person is exhausted, their sighs are endless, and their heart is worn thin by grief. What makes this passage beautiful in its rawness is that it shows us someone bringing their darkest, most vengeful feelings directly to God rather than hiding them.
