What does Judges 9:55 mean?

When people learned their ruthless leader was gone, they simply went home. This moment captures something very human: the spell that a strongman holds over people dissolves the moment he falls. Abimelech had seized power through violence and terror, and as long as he was alive, people felt compelled to follow or fear him. But his death meant the threat was over, and everyone could finally return to their own lives and families without that looming shadow. It's a quieter ending than you might expect after all the bloodshed and ambition in Abimelech's story. There's no triumphant celebration, no coronation of a new king, just ordinary people picking up their lives again. Sometimes freedom comes not through a grand victory, but simply when the thing that held us captive is finally removed.
