Judges 8:31
βHis concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son, and he named him Abimelech.β
What does Judges 8:31 mean?
Gideon had a relationship with a woman in Shechem (outside his main household) who gave birth to a son he named Abimelech, meaning "my father is king." This detail introduces us to a character whose story unfolds in the chapters ahead, and it shows us something important about Gideon himself: despite being raised up by God to deliver Israel, he was still a flawed person making choices that didn't always align with God's design for family and leadership. The mention of this son born outside of marriage hints at tensions and complications that will later create real problems for Israel. Sometimes Scripture includes these uncomfortable truths about its heroes, not to condemn them but to show us that God works through imperfect people and that our choices have real consequences for those who come after us.
