Judges 6:27
“Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as Yahweh had spoken to him. Because he feared his father’s household and the men of the city, he could not do it by day, but he did it by night.”
What does Judges 6:27 mean?
Gideon had just received a frightening call from God to tear down his father's altar to a false god, but he was terrified of what his own family and neighbors would do to him. So instead of acting openly in daylight like most people would, he gathered a small group of trusted servants and did the work under cover of darkness, managing his fear by taking what precautions he could. There's something very human about this moment. Gideon wasn't yet the confident warrior he would become, and God didn't shame him for his caution. Sometimes obedience doesn't look heroic or bold, and that's okay. We follow through on what we know is right even when we're shaking, even when we have to be strategic about it, even if nobody else sees us do it.
