Judges 5:31

What does Judges 5:31 mean?

This is the closing line of Deborah's victory song, sung after the Israelites defeated a powerful enemy army. The prayer asks God to deal with those who oppose him while those devoted to him flourish like the sun at full strength, full of warmth and brightness. It's not a wish for personal revenge, but a cry for God's justice to prevail and for his faithful people to thrive openly and fully. The note about forty years of peace that follows shows how the victory and this prayer were answered, giving the whole community a long season of safety and rest.
