What does Judges 3:4 mean?
When Israel entered the land of Canaan, God didn't immediately remove all the surrounding nations. Instead, he allowed some to remain as a kind of ongoing test, to see whether the Israelites would stay faithful to God's covenant or drift toward the idolatry and practices of their neighbors. It's like a parent letting a child face real choices and consequences, rather than removing every possible temptation, because genuine faithfulness means something only when alternatives exist. The challenge wasn't random punishment, but an opportunity for Israel to prove their commitment to the God who had rescued them and given them clear instructions through Moses. This reminds us that our own faith is often strengthened through testing, not by living in isolation from difficulty or temptation.
