What does Judges 3:10 mean?
Othniel, Israel's first judge, experienced the Holy Spirit empowering him to lead his people and accomplish what seemed impossible on his own. When God's Spirit came upon him, he gained both the wisdom to govern fairly and the strength to defeat a powerful enemy king who had oppressed Israel for eight years. The repeated emphasis on Othniel's hand prevailing isn't about personal strength, but about God working through him to deliver his people from bondage. This story appears early in Judges to establish a pattern: when Israel turns back to God, he sends judges filled with his Spirit to bring freedom and justice. It's encouragement that God doesn't leave his people abandoned in their struggles, and that the same Spirit who empowered ancient leaders is available to us today for the battles we face.
