Judges 19:17
“He lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?””
What does Judges 19:17 mean?
An old man notices a stranger passing through his town and does what hospitality required in ancient Israel—he asks where the traveler is coming from and where he's headed. This simple question opens a conversation that leads to the stranger being invited into the old man's home for shelter and food. In a time without hotels or safe public spaces, such questions were the beginning of life-saving kindness, a chance for the community to take responsibility for vulnerable people passing through. The old man's attentiveness here sets up one of the Bible's darkest stories, but in this moment, he's simply doing what was expected of someone who feared God and valued human dignity.
