What does Judges 19:12 mean?
An old man and his servant are traveling, and as evening falls, the master insists they keep going rather than stay in a city of non-Israelites. He chooses instead to push on to Gibeah, which is an Israelite town in Benjamin's territory. On the surface, it seems like a practical decision based on familiarity and safety. This moment becomes deeply tragic because Gibeah turns out to be far more dangerous than the foreign city would have been. The master's assumption that his own people will offer better hospitality proves catastrophically wrong, leading to one of the darkest episodes in the entire book of Judges.
