Judges 15:18
“He was very thirsty, and called on Yahweh, and said, “You have given this great deliverance by the hand of your servant; and now shall I die of thirst, and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?””
What does Judges 15:18 mean?
Samson has just defeated a thousand enemies with nothing but the jawbone of a donkey, and now his body is catching up with the reality of that exhausting battle. In his desperation, he's crying out to God with a raw mix of gratitude and complaint, almost saying: "You just gave me an incredible victory, so surely you're not going to let me die of thirst right now?" It's a honest prayer from someone who is spent and terrified, reminding God of what he just accomplished through him. What makes this moment so human is that Samson doesn't pretend to be fine. He's acknowledging his complete dependence on God while also pointing out that it wouldn't make sense for God to abandon him now. Whether we're at the end of a spiritual victory or just utterly exhausted, there's permission here to bring both our gratitude and our urgent needs directly to God, without needing to clean them up first.
