What does Judges 11:6 mean?
The elders of Gilead are desperate. Their land is under attack from the Ammonites, and they've turned to Jephthah, a skilled warrior they had previously rejected and driven away because of his illegitimate birth. Now, facing a crisis that threatens their survival, they swallow their pride and ask him to lead them into battle. This moment shows how fear and necessity can shift relationships, but it also sets up the tragedy to come, since Jephthah's vow (made in verse 30-31) will bring devastating personal consequences. Sometimes we turn to people or even God only when we're in trouble, forgetting the relationships we ignored during easier times.
