Judges 11:24
“Won’t you possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whoever Yahweh our God has dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.”
What does Judges 11:24 mean?
Jephthah is making an argument to the Ammonite king about land rights, and his logic reveals how people of that era understood God's relationship to territory. He's essentially saying: just as you believe your god Chemosh has given you your lands, we believe our God Yahweh has given us ours, so our claim is as valid as yours. He's using the king's own religious framework to defend Israel's occupation of the land east of the Jordan. This moment is important because it shows how ancient peoples saw divine will and national borders as inseparable. Jephthah isn't being cruel or claiming superiority so much as he's saying the two nations can't both rightfully claim the same land.
