“Gilead’s wife bore him sons. When his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out, and said to him, “You will not inherit in our father’s house, for you are the son of another woman.””
What does Judges 11:2 mean?
Jephthah was born to Gilead and a woman outside his household, making him legally an outsider in his own family. When Gilead's legitimate sons came of age, they used his questionable parentage as grounds to expel him entirely, denying him any share of the family inheritance. This rejection was both practical (protecting their own portions) and deeply personal, weaponizing his origins to wound him. It's a painful reminder of how families can use circumstances beyond a child's control to exclude and demean, and it sets up Jephthah's difficult path as an outcast who will later be called back when his community needs him most.
