What does Judges 1:8 mean?
After Joshua's death, the Israelite tribes had to continue conquering the land themselves, and Judah took the lead in attacking Jerusalem. This verse describes a brutal military campaign that was typical of ancient warfare, where cities were destroyed to prevent them from being used as enemy strongholds. Jerusalem would later become Israel's most important city under King David, but at this moment in history it was just another Canaanite city that stood in the way of Judah's inheritance. The passage reminds us that the early Israelites saw their conquest as a divine mission, though it came with real violence and displacement that affected the people already living there.
