What does Judges 1:35 mean?
The people of Joseph's tribe wanted to take full control of their land, but the Amorites stubbornly held onto their mountain strongholds and refused to leave. Rather than fight them to complete removal, Joseph's descendants found a middle path: they forced the Amorites into labor, making them work for the Israelites instead of eliminating them entirely. It's a reminder that sometimes our victories are partial and messy, and we make compromises that we thought we wouldn't have to make when we set out with big plans. The verse captures a real human experience of settling for "good enough" when the ideal proves too difficult to achieve.
