“Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its towns, nor Taanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.”
What does Judges 1:27 mean?
The tribe of Manasseh received a large territory in the promised land, but when it came time to fully settle it, they didn't complete the job. Instead of driving out the Canaanite people living in several key cities, they chose to live alongside them, and the Canaanites remained in control of those places. This verse shows us the real, messy consequences of incomplete obedience. God had called the Israelites to fully possess the land he'd given them, but Manasseh either lacked the strength, the will, or the faith to finish what they'd started. Over time, this compromise would create ongoing problems, as these remaining Canaanite communities maintained their own gods, customs, and independence within Israelite territory. Many of us recognize ourselves here: we know what we're called to do but settle for "good enough" instead of following through completely. This passage invites us to honestly consider where we might be holding back from what God is asking of us, and whether our hesitation might cost us more than the effort would.
