What does Judges 1:24 mean?
The Israelites spying on the city of Bethel have spotted someone leaving, and they make him an offer: help us find a way in, and you'll be spared when we take the city. It's a practical negotiation born from desperation, since a direct assault on the walled city would be costly. The promise of "dealing kindly" was meant to appeal to self-interest and secure the man's cooperation in betraying his own city's defenses. This moment sets up a transaction that feels transactional on the surface, yet it reveals how wars often turn on individual choices and moments of trust between former enemies, even when that trust is conditional and strategic.
