Jude 1:9
“But Michael, the archangel, when contending with the devil and arguing about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him an abusive condemnation, but said, “May the Lord rebuke you!””
What does Jude 1:9 mean?
Even the mightiest spiritual beings, Jude is telling us, respect boundaries in how they speak to those they oppose. Michael the archangel could have hurled insults or harsh accusations at Satan during their disagreement over Moses' body, but instead he deferred to God's authority with a simple statement: "May the Lord rebuke you." This matters for us because it suggests that spiritual power and moral strength aren't shown through aggressive speech or harsh judgment of others. Instead, Jude seems to be correcting some people in his community who were being abusive or presumptuous in their condemnations, perhaps of leaders or false teachers. If Michael, with all his divine authority, refused to speak contemptuously, then we're invited to examine whether our own words toward those we disagree with reflect similar restraint and respect for God's role as ultimate judge. Sometimes the strongest response is the quietest one.
