What does Joshua 9:4 mean?
The Gibeonites, facing certain destruction from Joshua's army, decided to deceive rather than fight. They dressed up like weary travelers from a distant land, loading their animals with worn-out supplies to make their journey seem long and genuine. This was their strategy to convince the Israelites they came from far away and therefore weren't part of the groups God had commanded Joshua to conquer, which were only the local Canaanite nations nearby. What makes this moment significant is how easily the deception worked, catching even Israel's leaders off guard.
