What does Joshua 9:18 mean?
The Israelites had made a binding oath to spare the Gibeonites, even though they later discovered the agreement was based on deception. Rather than break their word before God, they kept their promise, though the common people were understandably frustrated with their leaders for being tricked. This tension between honoring a commitment and feeling betrayed by those who made it reflects a real struggle: sometimes doing the right thing (keeping an oath) doesn't feel fair when we've been misled. The passage reminds us that integrity matters even when it's costly, and that our promises before God carry weight beyond our immediate circumstances.
