Joshua 9:14
“The men sampled their provisions, and didn’t ask counsel from Yahweh’s mouth.”
What does Joshua 9:14 mean?
The Israelites took the Gibeonites at face value, examining their worn supplies and tattered clothes as proof of a long journey, but they never stopped to pray or seek God's guidance about whether this alliance was wise. Their mistake shows how easy it is to trust what we can see and verify with our own senses while skipping the step of asking God for wisdom, especially when we're confident we already understand a situation. The Gibeonites were actually nearby neighbors trying to save themselves through deception, and Israel's failure to consult God cost them a binding agreement they'd soon regret. Sometimes the most practical-seeming choices are the ones most in need of spiritual discernment.
